Theatre

The Viking Theatre Program is for  students committed to learning the art of theatre production through the staging and production of dramas.
 
The program is directed by Kathleen Cobb and Timothy Wallner. 
 
INTRO THEATRE ARTS
GRADES OFFERED: 9-12
PREREQUISITES: None
TEACHER: Ms. Cobb

 

Course includes:

  • Learn basic theater principles in stage movement, voice, diction, and pantomime. 
  • Practice techniques to overcome stage-fright and develop self-confidence.
  • Play improv and competitive games with peers in class
  • Learn how to study lines and memorize a monologue
  • Perform in small group or duet scenes (in class only)
  • Study the history and vocabulary of theater. 
  • Study the works of selected major playwrights. 
  • Introduction to Costume and Set Design

 

Who should take Intro Theater?  

Since this is an intro class, it does a great job of showing a wide variety of theater knowledge, vocabulary and exercises.  It moves at a less intense pace than advanced classes and provides students with a low pressure, welcoming environment to learn the basics of acting and performance. 

 

ADV THEATRE II - IV
GRADES OFFERED: 10-12*
TEACHERS: Cobb & Wallner 
PREREQUISITES: Intro Theatre (with at least an 85 or above)* 
NOTE: *If a student has experience performing and is willing to audition for the directors, there is a possibility the course requirement can be waived.  

 

Course includes:

  • University of Texas DYP Project - Students will audition, rehearse and perform onstage at the University of Texas under the direction of a graduating senior.  All rehearsals are in class except two technical rehearsals & two performances dates.  This is an incredible program that only two other AISD schools offer, so participation is required for entrance to the class.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in characterization, diction, memorization, and concentration.
  • Study and deliver monologues and scene work 
  • Participate in team building,  communication and improv games
  • Auditioning - Students will learn how to confidently present themselves for auditions/interviews
  • Perform on various stages to demonstrate mastery of skills.
*Note:  Although most of the work we do is in class, there are some occasions where we will perform outside of the school day.
 

 

Who should take Advanced Theater?  

Anyone interested in acting and performing at a higher level.  Students don’t need a ton of experience, we can easily teach them the necessary knowledge -- but they must be willing to memorize lines and perform.  Most of our rehearsals take place during the day, but we will have some performances that will take place after school hours.  A unique aspect of this class is that students will get to participate in UT’s Directing Young Performers project.  Only two other schools in AISD offer this program, so we are very excited to get the opportunity.

 

INTRO TECHNICAL THEATRE
GRADES OFFERED: 9-12
PREREQUISITES: None
TEACHER: Ms. Cobb

 

Course includes:

  • An introductory course, which explores the backstage world of theatre. 
  • Students will investigate several areas of production and design from both a practical and a theoretical base. 
  • Students will be given the opportunity to learn about the following areas of technical theatre production:
    • Theatre and Shop Safety
    • Scenic design fundamentals and set construction
    • Technical aspects and basic operation of sound, fly system and lighting technology
    • Use of properties on stage and construction
    • Costume and Set Design Renderings (full colored, detailed drawings of your designs)
    • Explore career opportunities in the realm of theatre

 

NOTE: Students are REQUIRED to work afterschool on major productions for a minimum of 3 hours per six weeks.Arrangements can be made to find alternate solutions, but the student must be in communication with the director.  It is the students responsibility to communicate and work with the director (Cobb) to resolve the issue.

 

Who should take Intro Tech?  

Since this is an intro class, it does a great job of showing a wide variety of theater knowledge, vocabulary and concepts.  We do some design projects with costumes, set, sound, publicity. We construct models, organize the shop and learn how to use the tools and equipment.  This is a great class if you are curious about the opportunities in theater behind the scenes.  Our auditorium is one of the best equipped and newest auditoriums out of most high schools in AISD. Students will learn the odds and ins of their auditorium as well as how to use the various tools at their disposal.

 

ADVANCED TECHNICAL THEATRE (II - IV)
GRADES OFFERED: 9-12
TEACHER: Ms. Cobb
PREREQUISITES: Intro Theatre (with at least an 85 or above)*
NOTE: *If a student has experience with design, construction or can be recommended for the program by teacher recommendation, there is a possibility the course requirement can be waived.  

 

Course includes:

  • Continue to implement all aspects of theatre safety
  • More opportunities for hands on training and specialty tools/equipment
  • Implement designs in scenery, props, costumes, makeup, lighting, sound, and publicity
  • Students are in charge of running the technical elements for the campus (assemblies, presentation). 
  • Script Writing & Character Analysis
  • Attend live theatre events  and practice theatre etiquette
  • Analyze and evaluate live theatre performances

Who should take Adv Tech?  
Advanced Technical Theatre is designed for students who would like to further and refine their technical theatre knowledge and skills.  As an advanced course, the pace is quicker and there are more opportunities for hands on training and design.  Adv tech students are encouraged to join the production crews to hone their skills and knowledge surrounding the various aspects of technical design.

 

THEATRE PRODUCTION
GRADES OFFERED: 10-12* CLASS PERIODS: 5th period, B day
TEACHERS: Cobb & Wallner 
PREREQUISITES: Intro Theatre or Intro Tech (with at least an 85 or above)* 
NOTE: *If a student has experience with acting tech theater or can be recommended for the program by teacher recommendation, there is a possibility the course requirement can be waived.  

 

Course includes:

 

  • Participate in team building, communication and improv games
  • Auditioning skills - Students will learn how to confidently present themselves and tips   
  • Read, Analyze and interpret scripts and characters in a variety of works
  • Understand dramatic structure
  • Attend live theatre events
  • Practice theatre etiquette
  • Analyze and evaluate live theatre performances
  • Study the works of selected major playwrights
  • Script Writing
  • Character Analysis
  • Prop, Costume or Set Design

 

Who should take Theater Production?  
This is a great class if you enjoyed the intro class and want to know more.  The most unique thing about this course is that it combines both acting and technical knowledge.  We read plays, analyze characters, write scripts, work on the main stage set and costumes during productions -- it’s a wide variety of activities. From technical aspects to acting, this class helps students understand the process of making a production.
