Message from the Principal

Viking Nation,

The spring semester is upon us and is off to a great start. We began the semester with professional learning activities for our staff designed to promote 21st Century skill development for our students. Teachers from our vertical team joined us for a day of program exploration the first week back as well. I would like to thank the teachers of our future Vikings for their engagement that day and for the hard work they do to prepare our students for high school. The Navarro PD committee, as well as the many teachers and programs who participated in the vertical team day, are also deserving of many thanks for all of their hard work.

We also began the spring semester with several showings of the Putnam County Spelling Bee, a production from our Navarro theater department. It was great to see so many students, staff members, and friends from the community at the performances. The production received rave reviews and the students and staff are to be commended for their hard work and preparation in advance of these shows. The hard work clearly paid off. Our FFA program also excelled this January and won many awards at the Travis County Youth Show. Spring sports are also off to a strong start as the basketball teams have started district play and soccer is just ramping up. I could go on and on highlighting the accomplishments of our students and staff. The commitment to excellence is something to behold!

Collaboration with our community partners is in full swing as we work to make a positive impact in and around our school community. We are in full planning mode as we begin to gear up for our annual Community Schools Dinner and Futbol Rapido! Make sure to stay tuned for more details as those events approach. Thank you to our community partners, most notably our Family Resource Center, for all the effort to improve our community and support our families. The classes and services they provide to our community are essential elements in improving outcomes for so many families.

The spring semester will also bring the final push for this school year in preparing students for end of course exams, graduation, advanced placement tests, and many other areas of academics and extracurricular activities. So much goes into preparing our students for these challenges and I know all the hard work will pay off. Be sure to offer words of encouragement to our students as they confront these challenges.

Keep up to great work Viking Nation. Let’s make this semester one to remember!

Sincerely,

Steve Covin
Principal
