Cosmetology and Personal Care Services

The Cosmetology and Personal Care Services Program of Study prepares students for careers in the beauty and wellness industry by providing hands-on instruction in hair, skin, nail, and salon services. Students develop technical skills, professional communication, customer service, and business knowledge while learning industry safety and sanitation standards. The program prepares students for entry into postsecondary education and careers in cosmetology.

Students will learn to:

  • Apply professional salon safety and sanitation practices
  • Perform hair, skin, and nail care services
  • Develop customer service and communication skills
  • Demonstrate professionalism and workplace readiness
  • Explore careers in cosmetology and personal care services

Course Sequence

The following courses are required to complete the Cosmetology and Personal Care Services Program of Study. Courses are organized by program level and are not required to be taken in sequential order. Below are the program levels, their corresponding courses, and course descriptions.

  • Level 2: Introduction to Cosmetology
  • Level 3: Cosmetology I Lab
  • Level 4: Cosmetology II Lab

Introduction to Cosmetology provides students with an overview of the cosmetology profession and foundational skills used in salon and personal care settings. Students begin developing hands-on techniques while learning safety, sanitation, client interaction, and basic service procedures.

Students will learn to:

  • Understand the structure and expectations of the cosmetology industry
  • Apply safety, sanitation, and infection control procedures
  • Practice basic shampooing and hair care techniques
  • Develop professional communication and client service skills
  • Identify tools, products, and equipment used in salons

Note: Introduction to Cosmetology is a dual credit course offered in partnership with Lamar State College Orange (LSCO). Students who successfully meet LSCO requirements may earn 8 college credit hours through CSME 1401 and CSME 1405 while completing their high school coursework.

Cosmetology I Lab introduces students to the fundamental skills used in professional salons. Students receive hands-on instruction in hair care, haircutting, hairstyling, chemical services, skin care, nail care, and client consultation while following industry standards for safety and sanitation.

Students will learn to:

  • Perform basic hair cutting and styling techniques
  • Apply shampooing and conditioning procedures
  • Demonstrate chemical service fundamentals
  • Practice skin and nail care techniques
  • Develop communication and client service skills

Note: Cosmetology I Lab is a dual credit course offered in partnership with Lamar State College Orange (LSCO). Students who successfully meet LSCO requirements may earn 8 college credit hours through CSME 1410 and CSME 1442 while completing their high school coursework.

Cosmetology II Lab builds upon the skills learned in Cosmetology I by providing advanced instruction in hair design, chemical services, skin care, nail services, and salon operations. Students continue developing technical competencies while preparing for state licensure requirements and employment in the cosmetology industry.

Students will gain experience in:

  • Performing advanced cosmetology services
  • Applying hair coloring and chemical texture techniques
  • Providing skin and nail care services
  • Managing salon operations and client records
  • Preparing for state licensure and careers in cosmetology

Note: Cosmetology II Lab is a dual credit course offered in partnership with Lamar State College Orange (LSCO). Students who successfully meet LSCO requirements may earn 13 college credit hours through CSME 2401, CSME 2439, and CSME 2436 while completing their high school coursework.

Industry-Based Certifications

Students who successfully complete this program have the opportunity to earn industry-recognized certifications that validate their technical skills, industry knowledge, and workplace readiness. These credentials help prepare students for careers in cosmetology, barbering, esthetics, nail technology, and other personal care services while providing a competitive advantage for future employment and licensure.

Industry-Based Certifications may include:

  • Texas Cosmetology Operator License (upon meeting state eligibility requirements and passing the licensing examinations)
