Grading Policies

At Navarro Early College High School, grades reflect student mastery of curriculum, participation, and performance on assignments, projects, and assessments. Progress reports and report cards provide updates throughout the semester, and attendance impacts credit eligibility. This page explains how grades are calculated, reported, and the policies for earning credit.

Attendance & Credit

In addition to the Compulsory Attendance Law, Austin ISD follows the “90% Rule,” which requires students to attend at least 90% of class days to receive credit for a final grade, regardless of whether absences are excused or unexcused.

  • If a student attends at least 75% but less than 90% of class days, they may still earn credit by completing a plan approved by the principal.
  • If a student attends less than 75% of class days, credit may be earned only by completing a plan approved by the Campus Attendance Committee.
  • The Attendance Committee reviews appeals for extenuating circumstances and may impose conditions on credit receipt.

Progress Reports

Progress reports provide a snapshot of a student’s performance midway through each grading period. Two progress reports are issued per grading period, for a total of eight reports throughout the school year. If a student’s average falls below 70, the progress report will trigger communication with parents or guardians. Teachers may use progress reports to develop targeted interventions for students who are struggling. While progress reports allow parents to monitor academic progress, receiving a satisfactory report does not guarantee a passing semester grade.

Report Cards

Report cards summarize student performance for the grading period and are part of the permanent record. Semester and year-long courses are averaged according to district calculations, with exams weighted appropriately.

Calculations for Semester & Yearlong Courses

Grades are calculated based on 9-week averages and semester exams. Semester grades count 40% for each 9-week grading period and 20% for the semester exam.

1st Semester Average: (1st 9-weeks * 40%) + (2nd 9-weeks * 40%) + (1st semester exam * 20%)

2nd Semester Average: (3rd 9-weeks * 40%) + (4th 9-weeks * 40%) + (2nd semester exam * 20%)

Year Average: (1st Semester Avg + 2nd Semester Avg) ÷ 2

  • Students with outstanding credit-denied hours will not receive full course credit until semester hours are cleared.
  • Processed weekly through the Office of the Registrar in Frontline SIS.

Semester Average: (1st or 3rd 9-weeks * 40%) + (2nd or 4th 9-weeks * 40%) + (semester exam * 20%)
